Made of Straw

Strawberry Cottage was built with straw bales, from straw grown on the farm. After stacking the bales the walls were plastered to provide very thick, extra insulated walls.
Open the “honesty box” in Strawberry Cottage’s back porch and you can still see the straw and chicken wire that lie within the smooth white plaster.

Strawberry cottage was built as a straw bale cottage because:

• it is environmentally friendly (they were Oyster Bay's first sustainable vineyard).
• straw provides great insulation for a cosy cottage in winter and coolness in Marlborough's hot summers.
• it looks fantastic. The deep windowsills and white plaster finish give Strawberry Cottage its character.
• it can't be blown down - despite the rumour started by three little pigs and a wolf!
